Student of the Semester: Winter 2025

As the Winter Semester starts to draw to a close it’s time to reveal our Student of the Semester… Jennifer!

After deciding to learn French to connect with new additions to her family, Jennifer has been taking our French Chick classes, together with her sister, for 3 semesters!

We asked Jennifer a few questions about her experience learning with us and her top tips for a successful language journey!

What made you start the classes at Lingo Flamingo?

I wanted to try learning a language for a while as I’ve always felt a bit guilty when I go abroad and everyone speaks English as a second language and I could not speak any other languages. My sister married a man from Lyon and they now have a half French half Scottish daughter together. As she started to say more French words, this became a big motivator for my sister and I to start classes.

Where did your language journey take you?

I haven’t actually been to France since starting the classes but I am really keen to go back and visit my brother in law’s family in Lyon to practice my French. They have visited Scotland a few times recently though and I do feel I can contribute more to the conversation now!

Do you have any tips for continued learning?

I do at least 5 minutes of Duolingo per day and sometimes listen to French podcasts or music. I try to watch some French TV too but struggle to keep up with the speed of the talking! YouTube is also a great resource for a quick refresher of knowledge while there are breaks between semesters at Lingo Flamingo.

How do you find the Lingo Flamingo classes?

I find the classes really fun and sociable and the students are always really interesting people. Lea is hilarious and makes learning really enjoyable and engaging. I found the classes when I googled French classes near me and then it just so happened my sister had done the same thing! When she told me she had enrolled in her first semester I booked too so we have been attending together for 3 semesters now.

When you’re not at Lingo Flamingo, what do you get up to?

I love spending time with my husband and family. We recently got a border terrier puppy who is keeping us busy and bringing us lots of joy! I also love listening to records, crocheting and sculpting with clay.

Thanks for speaking to us Jennifer and good luck as you continue your language journey!
