Student of the Semester: Autumn 2024

As the Autumn Semester starts to draw to a close it’s time to reveal our Student of the Semester… Kirsty!

Kirsty with her stamp from the Kinkaku-ji in Kyoto in March!

Having attended every Post-Chick Japanese course since Summer 2022, Kirsty finally got to test her learning and put her knowledge to use during her first trip to Japan earlier this year!

We asked Kirsty a few questions about her experience learning with us and her top tips for a successful language journey!

What made you start the classes at Lingo Flamingo?

I did an engine search for online language schools in Glasgow and was instantly drawn in by Lingo Flamingo's quirky name and webpage design! Because I'd attended Japanese lessons previously I wasn't sure a beginners class would be suitable for me, so I was really glad to see that Lingo Flamingo offered a Post-Chick (intermediate) course that I could join and continue from a level I was already at.

Where did your language journey take you?

I have been learning for almost 4 years now and I was able to put my language skills to the ultimate test for the first time in Japan this year! I can't wait to learn more and go back soon.

Do you have any tips for continued learning?

Listening to podcasts and news channels in Japanese has helped me immensely. Even if it's much too advanced and I can only catch a word here and there or a phrase or two, it's been a great way to improve my listening comprehension and I'm getting more used to hearing native Japanese.

How do you find the Lingo Flamingo classes?

I love my class! I look forward to it every week and I know Reiko sensei is going to challenge me and my classmates to bring out our best.

When you’re not at Lingo Flamingo, what do you get up to?

I work full time and I love staying active. Mostly I do outdoor running and conditioning classes but I love the odd spin class too. When I'm not reading Manga or watching anime (in Japanese of course!), I love going to new places for a wander and trying out new restaurants with friends. My partner and I love travelling so we try and holiday as much as we can. I will be saving up my pennies to visit Japan again next year for sure!

Thanks for speaking to us Kirsty and good luck as you continue your language journey!
