Bringing Latin American Culture to Glasgow!
We sat down with Nancy, one our Spanish tutors, to find out more about how she’s bringing her Latin American and Mexican culture into her classes and to the local Glasgow community through dance!
I am Nancy from Mexico - a Spanish tutor at Lingo Flamingo. I really enjoy teaching my first language and I love my Mexican and Latin American culture and I share it in the classes. I get a lot of satisfaction and pride for helping my students to get confident by learning a new language and helping them to achieve a new goal.
I am really passionate about creating a relaxed and enjoyable environment that gives the chance to learn and have fun at the same time. I make activities as icebreakers to bring people together. I offer my students a range of vocabulary with different accents in Spanish, because Spanish is spoken 21 countries! I am happy to see my students having fun and see them enjoying the process and returning for more classes. I am pleased to be part of their process.
I am also a performer and dance artist. I teach Bellydance and Latin dance Rhythms (Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, Reggaeton, etc.) I love sharing my background through dancing.
My dance classes focus on empowering students by giving them the confidence to embrace their bodies and develop strength and fitness. Dance and movement as a way to express and develop self-love and having a Fiesta.
I am currently in charge of a dance project ‘LatinoDanceProject’ to give voice to a Latin American minority group in Glasgow and build a community. The inspiration and decision came from leading storytelling and dance workshops for people from different backgrounds, migrants, and refugees. The creation of activities where dance is a connection between people searching for community and belonging is powerful and helps in the process of adapting to a new country. LDP is our community in Glasgow and we share our culture through dancing.
